Jeff Sutheland at the Emporium

November 27, 2015

On view at Yellow Springs’ Emporium Cafe are the paintings of Cincinnati-based artist Jeff Sutheland.  Below are excerpts from his artist statement, titled “Creative Spirits, the Fundamental Spirit of Creativity Unbounded.”

“The creative spirits are the product of automatic imaging in which I open myself to the flow of subconscious creative variation. My process is to sit with my journal and work until the individual images come alive with a “voice” or force of personality.  Later I transfer selected “conversation” as group activity would suggest.  I don’t dictate a theme, but instead allow suggestive balance to guide whatever may be conveyed.  Personification allows creativity, with it’s ignite variance, to “speak” in a language of known forms: human, animal, insect, plant life, aliens and ghosts.”
